{"id":16,"date":"2013-12-19T15:02:23","date_gmt":"2013-12-19T15:02:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/zhanghongmn.com\/?page_id=16"},"modified":"2014-10-12T23:54:57","modified_gmt":"2014-10-12T23:54:57","slug":"new-work-commissions","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/zhanghongmn.com\/?page_id=16","title":{"rendered":"Appreciation"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Chinese painting theory and techniques &#8211; Six Canons (\u516d\u6cd5)<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In order to learn traditional Chinese painting well or appreciate Chinese painting enjoyably, it is important to know the six principles of traditional Chinese painting or Six Canons.<\/p>\n<p>Six Canons was established by Xie He (\u8b1d\u8d6b), Southern Qi Dynasty, in his book &#8220;The Record of the Classification of Old Painters&#8221; (\u53e4\u753b\u54c1\u5f55). It sets up aesthetically standards to comment and critique paintings. It also serves a basic framework to ancient Chinese painting theory. The Six Canons cover areas like brush stroke technique, use of color, form of image, composition and creation, etc. Even now in the modern days those principles are still important and useful, be a valuable guide to paint for artist as well as to judge a painting for critics.<\/p>\n<p>The six elements in their proper order are as the following:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Spirit vitality \uff08\u6c23\u97fb\u751f\u52d5\uff09<\/strong><br \/>\nLiterally Qi means energy, Yun means Rhyme, Shengdong means vividly. To put together it has the meaning that artists aim to transmit the spirit into the painting or to create vitality in the painting, so that the painting is live and vivid as of a human.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bone method of using the brush \uff08\u9aa8\u6cd5\u7528\u7b14\uff09<\/strong><br \/>\nLiterally Gu means bone, Fa means method, Yongbi means use of brush. To put together it means to use strong strokes or use the calligraphic strokes in the painting. Here bone refers to brush power and brush strength that is one of the utmost standards in Chinese calligraphy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Correspondence to the object \uff08\u5e94\u7269\u5199\u5f62\uff09<\/strong><br \/>\nLiterally Yingwu means corresponding to the object, Xiexing means depicting of form. The third element means the artist need depict the object shape and appearance. It clearly indicated that even in the 1500 years ago, Chinese traditional painting theory already emphasize the way to grasp the relationship between art and reality, external and internal expression.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Suit the subject matter to apply color \uff08\u968f\u7c7b\u5085\u5f69\uff09<\/strong><br \/>\nThis is talk about using of color based on the category of objects. The idea is to apply the color is similar to the nature of the objects in the painting that including the layers, value and tone.<\/p>\n<p>Placing and arrangement \uff08\u7ecf\u8425\u4f4d\u7f6e\uff09<br \/>\nThis is for the proper painting composition including space and depth. Literally Jingying means planning, Weizhi, as a noun it means position and as a verb it means to arrange. It is to describe that to compose a painting should focus on conception and idea as well as placing and arrangement.<\/p>\n<p>Copying of models \uff08\u4f20\u6a21\u79fb\u5199\uff09<br \/>\nOne of the most effective ways of learning Chinese painting is to copy earlier masters\u2019 works. Even now people, including outstanding artist use copying method to further understanding and absorbing those of creative past masters. The most important is that the method of \u2018copy\u2019 mentioned here is different concept of common heard western terms of \u2018copy cat\u2019.
